As torrents in summer

Longfellow / Elgar

As torrents in summer,
Half dried in their channels,
Suddenly rise,
tho’ the sky is still cloudlesss.
For rain has been falling.
Far off at their fountains;

So hearts that are fainting
Grow full to o’erflowing,
And they that behold it,
Marvel, and know not
That God at their fountains
Far off has been raining!

Zoals het wilde water zomers,
in een half verdroogde bedding
plotseling stijgt,
zonder een wolkje aan de lucht,
omdat het ver weg bij de bron
geregend heeft;

zo kan een verschrompeld hart
volledig overstromen,
tot verwondering van de omstanders,
want ze weten niet
dat God de bron ver weg
beregend heeft.
